Lone Star
Big Tuck
By Bart White
Houston has been the pride of Texas’ rap scene, but Big Tuck and his cohorts at T-Town Music are ready to show the world that Dallas has its own music to offer. After moving 350,000 units independently as a solo artist and with his group, the Dirty South Rydaz, Big Tuck is stepping up in September with his first major label release, The Absolute Truth, on Universal Records.
Can you give me a little background about how and when you got started rapping?
Actually I started with poetry and music and then just kinda upgraded to the verbal assault. Me and a group called Dirty South Rydaz with Tum Tum, Fat Bastard, Lil Ronnie, Addiction, Double T, and the CEO George Lopez… we been doin it bout six years business-wise.
Can you describe the Dallas sound a little bit? What do you think is next for the city?
Okay, the Dallas music scene… it’s real Southern, but its also club crunk, but it’s like a Southern energy, you know. I think Dallas is actually gonna be a powerhouse because we have a style that’s undeniable. Dallas has been overlooked for a long time. You know, everybody have they time. Right now, its Dallas’ time.
How have things changed for you since signing with Universal late last year?
Actually, its pretty much the same cuz we been usin’ the same grindin’ tactics since basically day one. And I’m glad that we was doin’ them grindin’ tactics. At the same time, it’s kinda different… You know I just went to the Hit Factory in Miami and worked with Cool & Dre, so it was pretty different to get to vibe with somebody you actually listen to. So, it’s a big step. Man you know [the album] is hot. You know I got the whole DSR group on it, Slim Thug, Bun B, Paul Wall, Chamillionaire, Cool & Dre did a track, my first single and I got Erykah Badu on the track also. It’s called “That’s What’s Up.”
Is there gonna be a group Dirty South Rydaz album up next after you drop the solo?
After my album, it’s gonna be a Tum Tum album, then its gon be a Fat B album, then the group album. So the group album’ll actually be like our fourth release. With every album, it could be a solo album, but you could believe the whole movement on it. So it’s pretty much like a group thing. You hear Tuck, you hear Double T, you hear Tum, you hear Tuck… You know it’s always together with everything.
Have you felt a lot of love from people in the South, even though Dallas might not be real well known?
I have no problems with nobody. Everybody pretty much showed me love. I think it’s a Southern hospitality thing.
Where else can we hear you until the album drops? How can people get more info?
